My World

Short Story by Nadeem Alam

My world consisted of a few yards under a bridge. I had not seen my father. My mother was all that I had. I spent all of my time playing with a small toy and looking at my sky, which was actually the belly of the bridge.

One day, when my mother was not around, someone picked me up and took me away from my world. I was too little to protest. I did make some noise, but nobody paid heed to my sobs and whines.

The man who kidnapped me took me to his home, which was a little bigger than mine. He kept me locked inside a room and only came thrice a day to feed me. My world was changed. The sky was now a roof with a noisy ceiling fan and a gigantic spider web. I missed my old world and I missed my mom. I felt lonely and scared. I cried most of the time.

My kidnapper did not have any marketing sense. He showed me to many people, but they all rejected me. I was kept very untidy. I smelled bad, too. But one day, a lovely, old couple came and took me to their home. It changed my world again. The couple did not have any children so they brought me up well. I was provided with everything I could wish for. It was over there that, for the very first time in my life, I saw the clear, blue sky. As I grew up, the couple told me the story of my adoption. But I knew it all along. I respected them and loved them as I loved my real mom.

I made so many plans to contribute to society and to build shelters for the homeless. I often venture out to observe how life dwells under the dusty bridges and along noisy railway tracks. I want to understand the world consisting of only a few yards with no sky of its own. I want to change all of that, but I am helpless. After all, I am just a Labrador.

  2. Looks simple but there's somehow symbolism. Labrador could be symbolized as ignored class of the society. Blue sky tells us of peace, harmony and freedom. In a world, where the luxurious class enjoys every single moment of life with high facilities, there are people under the ignored bridge of suffering.
The punchline fictionalized the story that seemed to be too simple in the beginning.
    Nice!
