Are you happy...

If you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands. Well, if you did not clap your hands then keep reading this article, else just scroll to the last paragraph.
All living beings tend to remain happy if they are healthy and are fed properly – less the human beings. Even a human child is contended with the bare minimum provisions. But as we grow up, our necessities divert from physical requirements towards the psychological needs. Abraham Maslow called it the ‘Hierarchy of needs.’
As our lower level requirements are met, we start feeling deficiency of higher level needs. As we go up, the zest keeps rising. And literally there is no end to it. So what makes us unhappy and why do we keep striving hard to achieve more when already we have so much to survive a life time? Here is my take on it:
Social Approval
When we start seeing ourselves from other people’s eyes then we are never happy. We keep trying to get central place in a social circle and sometimes we lose the position we already hold. When we cut the line and become an imposter then all our energy goes in maintaining that false image. The fear of getting caught or getting exposed never lets you have a good night sleep.
Better Life Style
There is nothing wrong in trying hard to have a better life style. But unless you put a limit then there is no end to it. Is there anything in the world which Nawaz Sharif does not have? Why is he making his life miserable? Why is he so unhappy despite having all that money, a loving family, power, security and unlimited resources. You have to put a cap somewhere and realize the true purpose of your existence. Maslow called it Self-actualization.
Pessimist Approach
Be an optimist. Have a positive perspective of the life and people around you. Help others and accept help. You must have come across people who would start a sentence with the word ‘No’. What do you think about them? Hope you are not one of them. Always think positively. It will make your life happy and meaningful.
Envy
Being competitive is a positive approach but feeling jealous may ruin your life. You are always worried of other people’s successes or how good they look or how bigger house they have. It does no good to you. Instead, feel grateful for what you have and strive for smaller achievable goals at first.
Focus
Do not lose focus in your life. Just remember, never reinforce your failures. Do not waste time on what you cannot do. Always build on your strong points. Exploit your successes.
Save for Rainy Day
Do not put all your eggs in one basket. Have multiple saving options. Do not over spend. Save some for the rainy day which for sure will come. At the same time, live in the present. Do not sacrifice the comfort of today for some unforeseen thing of the future.
Conclusion
I can go on and on but it will soon become boring. Just to conclude, learn to let go of the things you don’t need. Similarly, learn to forgive and ignore. It will make your life so easy. At the same time, do not forget the people who are good to you or who did something wonderful for you. They are your asset. You must reciprocate. So when are you going to do something good for them?
