This too shall pass
Einstein presented the theory of relativity more than a hundred years ago but it has been proven just recently that time actually passes at varying speeds at different places depending upon the gravitational pull in that area.
Psychologically as well, an hour may pass in a jiffy for a happy person spending time with friends and the same time span may take forever to pass for a lonely or a sad person or someone waiting for his turn in a dentist's office.
So what is it that sometime makes the time to fly and at other times freezes it. Allama Iqbal said, "Maheeny wasl kay gharion ke soorat urhy jaty hain, magar gharian judai ke guzarti hain maheeno mein." When you are with your loved ones, months pass in seconds and when you are away, then seconds become months.
Its all in our brain. Its how we perceive the things, events and places. Its how much something interests us. And of course it all happens when our tummy is full. As someone asked from a hungry person about the full moon and he replied, ''Baba humen tu yeh be nazar ati hain rotiyan...."
And who has not heard the beautiful song from the Debbie Moore movie Ghost, ''time goes by so slowly...'
And then there are happy times, and happy songs but let's not worry about the happy moments which pass very quickly but what to do when time seems to have stopped.
Stop Counting the Seconds
Well, as I said before 'its all up in our brain." First thing we should do is to stop counting the seconds. Its just like if you start looking at the pot on water, it would never boil. Similarly, if you start watching the clock again and again, the time gets into slow motion.
Relive the Past
Whenever you are stuck in a time continuum , think of all the happy times you had. Go back in the past or an imaginary scene can be created or start visualizing some good movie scene. It will certainly make the time less painful and will help it pass quickly.
Plan the Future
Another strategy to push the time is to start planning for the future. Think of redecorating the house or start planning for some trip.
This Too Shall Pass
Whatever the level of anxiety and pain being caused by an event or a sad news, just repeat in your head that... this too shall pass.
Engage in an Activity
Engage yourself in an activity, read a book, watch your favorite show, open YouTube, talk to a friend, play some game, use Facebook or Whatsapp... Just don't sit idle. If you find nothing to do then just go out for a walk.
